This summer, Ana de Matos became one of the newest Knicks City Dancers. The 23-year-old Brazilian beauty started dancing in her home country when she was two years old, doing national styles like the samba. When Ana moved to Weston, FL, at 10, she began training in ballet, tap, jazz, modern and lyrical. As a mechanical engineering student at Duke University, Ana spent four years on the college’s dance team. Now, she’s one of seven new dancers on the 20-member KCD. Ana talked to DS about what it takes to make it to the pro team level.

Dance Spirit: Why did you decide to audition for the Knicks City Dancers?
Ana de Matos: I enjoyed Duke’s team so much and I wanted to have that experience again. I was also excited about the thought of performing at Madison Square Garden.

DS: How did you prepare for the audition?
AdM: I did the KCD workshops and audition clinics. The clinics were crucial because they were geared toward teaching you the style of the team’s choreography. And you get an inside perspective from girls already on the team. I also took gym classes because I knew I needed to be physically fit and resilient.

DS: What was the audition like? What did you have to do?
AdM: The audition was five days long. First they wanted to see our technique, so we went across the floor doing battements, turns and leaps. Then we started learning choreography and being put into groups and getting cut. On the first day, it went from 500 to 35 girls. The second day the 2009-10 KCD girls joined us, and Gil Duldulao taught choreography. After that round we were cut to 29 girls who made it to the training camp. We spent the next three days cleaning choreography. They wanted to see how quickly you process corrections and how aware you are of your spacing. On the last day, a personal trainer did a bootcamp. I had to give that one final push, which was incredibly difficult. After the bootcamp, they announced the team. The same day, we jumped right in, getting ready for our first appearance.

DS: What was your reaction when you found out you’d made the team?
AdM: I was thrilled! And I was in shock–it took a whole week to process that I’d made it that far.

DS: What are you most excited about?
AdM: Getting to know these girls. I’m also looking forward to learning a lot of new choreography and to expanding my dance background.

Going Pro Entertainment, LLC provides consulting for future professional cheerleaders and dancers, as well as services such as event planning, talent search, choreography, marketing and more. Pro cheer and dance consultants manage their region and guide candidates during the audition process. Additional responsibilities include planning regional events and taking an active role to market GPE services to that region. These positions work on a commission structure and typically are held by women who work full-time in other areas and have 5-15 hours per week to devote to developing their region and consulting.

GPE Consultant Qualifications:
- Professional cheerleader or dancer for the NBA or NFL for minimum 2 seasons. Preference given to candidates who performed for more than one team and/or league.
- Preferably women of elite status from your organization such as former captains, Pro Bowl and All Star representatives, choreographers, calendar cover models

Is there an age limit?
This is no maximum age limit.
Minimum age requirement is 18 by August 15th, 2010.

Are there any height to weight restrictions?
You should be in overall great shape. We do not have a height to weight requirement. We have no maximum or minimum weight requirement.  

Are auditions open to the public?
Auditions are closed to the public. This includes family and friends.

What do I need for auditions?
Auditions can run all day. Please bring with you:
• Drink and snack
• Sweat towel
• Make-up & Hair Products

Do you have any prep classes; do I have to take the prep classes to make the team?
• We will have one prep class on Wednesday, August 11th from 7-8:30 at Du Burns Arena.
• You do not have to take the prep classes in order to the make the team. However, it is recommended as all prep classes are taught by the director and some audition choreography will be taught.

How should I wear my hair and make up?
•Make-up and hair should compliment your features.
•You should wear your hair down.

What will the judges focus on and look for?
•Dance technique
•Performance
•Showmanship and personality
•Dance skills
•Fitness

What should I wear to the auditions?
•Sports bra or crop top with stomach showing.

Congratulations to the 2010-2011 BlazerDancers! The sixteen dancers who make up the squad were chosen from thirty three finalists who have been auditioning for the past week to make the team.

The audition process started with a weekend of preliminary rounds where dancers learned and performed three routines for judges with cuts being made after each routine. Judges included Trail Blazers representatives, professionals from the dance community, former BlazerDancers, jounalists and fans. The judges were looking for well-rounded performers to represent the Trail Blazers organization.

By the second day, the field was cut down to 33 finalists, including eleven returning BlazerDancers who were all competing for one of the 16 spots. The finalists spent the next week going through interviews with Trail Blazers representatives, practicing the 3 finals routines that they learned, and creating a solo routine to perform at the finals. When the dancers arrived for the finals at the Winningstad Theater in Portland’s Center for the Performing Arts, they were surprised with an additional dance to perform and only one hour to prepare for it. Luckily, this was a free-style “hot time-out” dance that didn’t require any choreography, but instead was meant to showcase the dancers’ personalities and their ability to have fun and play to the crowd.

After performing five routines, the judges’ scores were tallied and the audition process was over. Unfortunately for the dancers, they had to wait 24 hours to find out whether they had made the team. The next day, each dancer came to the Rose Garden and found out individually if she had made the final cut by finding a BlazerDancer uniform in her locker. Once a dancer got the good news, she joined the rest of her excited teammates.

This season’s squad includes eleven returning dancers, two dancers who were on the team in previous years, and three rookies. The Trail Blazers are happy and proud to introduce you to a group of young women the fans will come to know very well.

UFL to Hold Open Cheerleader Tryouts for 2010 Season in All Team Cities

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Monday, May 24, 2010 – With tryouts for football players well underway, the United Football League is to begin a completely different type of talent search – for passionate and energetic young women to make up each team’s 2010 UFL Cheer and Dance Teams.

The Florida Tuskers, Hartford Colonials, Las Vegas Locos, Omaha Nighthawks and Sacramento Mountain Lions will each boast a cheer and dance team when the UFL enters its second season in the fall of 2010.  Auditions to find dancers in each UFL city will be broken down into three rounds and will be held between June 5 and June 26.

Each market is seeking female dancers / cheerleaders with high energy, great personalities, physical fitness and a passion for dance, cheering and football.  Women must be 18 years of age by the date of their final audition.

“We are looking for cheerleaders and dancers with a passion for football,” said UFL Cheer and Dance Development Director Billie O’Hara.  “This is a great opportunity for young women to be part of a professional football cheer team and perform before thousands of fans and in front of nationwide television audiences.”

The dance team will perform at all four of its team’s home games this fall and will serve as ambassadors for the organization throughout the season.

At the auditions, participants will be asked to learn a short across the floor routine that may include high kicks, jazz technique and hip hop choreography, as well as free style.  Depending on the turnout, participants should plan on spending a good portion of the day at the preliminaries, which are closed to the public.

Tryouts will be hosted in each geographic region and include closed dance auditions, one-on-one interviews, and a final audition that will be open to the public, family and friends.  Candidates must register online at www.ufl-football.com.
