NBA Suns Dancers Auditions 2011-2012

It’s summer time…and NBA Dancer auditions are heating up! Next up: Phoenix Suns Dancers 2011-2012! Be sure to visit their website for FAQs and information. Here’s the scoop about the July 16th Audition:

Preliminary Audition: Saturday, July 16

Location:
Grand Canyon University
Student Recreational Center
3300 West Camelback Rd
Phoenix, AZ, 85017

  • Registration: 9 am
  • Audition begins promptly at 10 am
  • The preliminary round will begin with learning a technique combination which will include turns, kicks and leaps. Dancers will audition this routine across the floor in small groups for a panel of judges where first cuts will be made. Those making it to the next round will learn the audition routine, as well as have an opportunity to freestyle. Dancers will perform the routine in small groups for the judges. Another round of cuts will be made. Dancers making it through the second round of cuts will be asked to return Sunday, July 17th for Semi-Finals. Lunch will be provided.

    Semi-Finals: Sunday, July 17

  • Each semi-finalist will be given an interview time on Saturday following the preliminary audition. Interviews will be approx 10-15 min in length. After interviewing, dancers will have an individual photo shoot session with the team’s photographer. Attire for the interview and photo shoot is up to the dancer’s discretion. More information about attire will be addressed at the prep clinics. When the interview and photo shoot are complete, dancers will be asked to change into dance clothes and wait for the performance part of the day to begin. The semi-finalists will perform the audition routine from Saturday as well as their own original choreography for the judges. The Suns will select and distribute the individual choreography music to the dancers prior to Sunday. The dancers invited to attend training camp will be announced at the end of the day.
  • Training Camp: Tuesday, July 19 & Thursday, July 21

  • Time, location, and other details for training camp will be made available to the finalists on Sunday. It will take place in the evening and both nights are mandatory!
  • Finals: Sunday, July 23

  • Location & Time: TBD
  • The final round of auditions will include auditioning all choreography learned throughout the course of the week in small groups for a panel of judges.

    It’s not too late to get to a prep class! Here’s the info from suns.com:

    Attending a prep clinic is not mandatory, but highly recommended for all candidates interested in auditioning. Different dance routines will be taught at each clinic, but the same information will be discussed. Prep clinics are closed to spectators, NO EXCEPTIONS!

    Prep Clinic Dates/Times:

    Saturday, July 9 (New!)

    • Registration: 1:30 pm
    • Clinic: 2 – 4 pm (doors will close promptly at 2 pm so please do not be late)

    Wednesday, July 13

    • Registration: 6:30 pm
    • Clinic: 7 – 9 pm (doors will close promptly at 7 pm so please do not be late)

    Thursday, July 14

    • Registration: 6:30 pm
    • Clinic: 7 – 9 pm (doors will close promptly at 7 pm so please do not be late)

    Cost:

    July 9, 13 & 14 Clinic Fee: $25 per participant, per clinic
    (Payment will be collected upon arrival. Cash or money order only please!)

    Age Requirements:

    Must be 18 years of age by audition date (July 16) in order to audition. Participants 17 years of age may attend the clinics but need a parent or legal guardian present at registration to sign the waiver release.

    **Parking is free in attached arena garage. Garage entrance is located off of 1st Street between Jefferson and Jackson. Entrance to the Practice Court is through the southeast doors (back of arena) off of Jackson and 3rd Street.**

    Attire:

    Please wear dance or workout apparel and athletic or dance shoes with non-marking soles. Jeans and or loose fitting attire are highly discouraged.

    What to expect:

    These Audition Prep Clinics are designed to take you through a mock audition. It will cover everything you need to know and expect on audition day.

    The day will consist of:

    • Group warm-up
    • An across the floor combination consisting of different technique elements
    • Learn a stylized combination similar to the audition routine (this is NOT the actual audition routine. All material being auditioned will be taught the day of the audition.)
    • Meet and learn material from current 2010-11 Suns Dancers
    • Freestyle/solo round practice and tips
    • See examples of appropriate audition attire, hair, and make-up
    • Discussions covering resume writing and headshot submissions, judging criteria, nutrition and exercise

    The Audition Prep Clinics on July 13 & 14 are smaller scale and were added for anyone not able to attend the May and June clinics. They will consist of learning a routine performed by the Suns Dancers during the 2010-11 season and a Q&A session with Suns VP of game operations, Kip Helt.
