Audition begins promptly at 10 am

The preliminary round will begin with learning a technique combination which will include turns, kicks and leaps. Dancers will audition this routine across the floor in small groups for a panel of judges where first cuts will be made. Those making it to the next round will learn the audition routine, as well as have an opportunity to freestyle. Dancers will perform the routine in small groups for the judges. Another round of cuts will be made. Dancers making it through the second round of cuts will be asked to return Sunday, July 17th for Semi-Finals. Lunch will be provided.

Each semi-finalist will be given an interview time on Saturday following the preliminary audition. Interviews will be approx 10-15 min in length. After interviewing, dancers will have an individual photo shoot session with the team’s photographer. Attire for the interview and photo shoot is up to the dancer’s discretion. More information about attire will be addressed at the prep clinics. When the interview and photo shoot are complete, dancers will be asked to change into dance clothes and wait for the performance part of the day to begin. The semi-finalists will perform the audition routine from Saturday as well as their own original choreography for the judges. The Suns will select and distribute the individual choreography music to the dancers prior to Sunday. The dancers invited to attend training camp will be announced at the end of the day.

Training Camp: Tuesday, July 19 & Thursday, July 21

Time, location, and other details for training camp will be made available to the finalists on Sunday. It will take place in the evening and both nights are mandatory!

Finals: Sunday, July 23

Location & Time: TBD

The final round of auditions will include auditioning all choreography learned throughout the course of the week in small groups for a panel of judges.

Attending a prep clinic is not mandatory, but highly recommended for all candidates interested in auditioning. Different dance routines will be taught at each clinic, but the same information will be discussed. Prep clinics are closed to spectators, NO EXCEPTIONS!

Attire:

Please wear dance or workout apparel and athletic or dance shoes with non-marking soles. Jeans and or loose fitting attire are highly discouraged.

What to expect:

These Audition Prep Clinics are designed to take you through a mock audition. It will cover everything you need to know and expect on audition day.

The day will consist of:

• Group warm-up
• An across the floor combination consisting of different technique elements
• Learn a stylized combination similar to the audition routine (this is NOT the actual audition routine. All material being auditioned will be taught the day of the audition.)
• Meet and learn material from current 2010-11 Suns Dancers
• Freestyle/solo round practice and tips
• See examples of appropriate audition attire, hair, and make-up
• Discussions covering resume writing and headshot submissions, judging criteria, nutrition and exercise

The Audition Prep Clinics on July 13 & 14 are smaller scale and were added for anyone not able to attend the May and June clinics. They will consist of learning a routine performed by the Suns Dancers during the 2010-11 season and a Q&A session with Suns VP of game operations, Kip Helt.

The path toward the start of the third United Football League season will continue in the coming weeks with cheerleading/dance team tryouts in each of the five league markets.

“What it does for us, it gives us promotion and tangible content in each of our cities where our teams are playing, where we haven’t even started player tryouts yet,” said Brian Melekian, UFL Vice President of Operations. “The cheerleading auditions will be a kickoff party for 2011.”

In addition to UFL teams having to stock their rosters, each team’s respective cheerleading/dance squad does, as well. And here is how they will do it:

- LAS VEGAS LOCOMOTION - The preliminary Locomotion auditions will be March 26 from 1-5 p.m. at the Fern Adair Conservatory of the Arts (3265 E. Patrick Lane). Registration begins at noon.

The finals will take place April 9 at noon at Blue Martini (6593 Las Vegas Blvd South # B-214). In-between the preliminaries and finals, there will be interviews and boot camp sessions.

- OMAHA NIGHTHAWKS - The Nighthawks cheerleading/dance team will have preliminary tryouts March 4-6, and the finals are scheduled for April 16. The multi-step audition process begins with an optional Tryout Prep Class, slated for February 24 at I Think Fit Gym at 6:30 p.m. The cost of the class is $15 cash, and while the class is not required, it could be helpful.

Preliminary registration will begin on March 4 at 6 p.m., and the audition process will begin promptly at 7 p.m. This year’s preliminaries are a weekend-long process, and will be at I Think Fit Gym.

- On March 4, all rookie and veteran candidates interested in auditioning arrive, stretch and warm up. After a brief overview of how the night will be run, the tryout process will begin. The candidates will perform their self-prepared 40-second solo. The performance order will be drawn at random. After all candidates have performed, a call-back list will be announced. Candidates who are asked back will return on March 5.

- On March 5, check-in starts at 12:30 p.m., with the audition process starting at 1 p.m. Across-the-floor work with kicks, leaps, turns, tumbling and other added skills will be performed. Candidates will learn two different routines as a group, dance “A” and “B”. Call-back candidates will be announced after across-the-floor work and learning ability are evaluated.

- On March 6, the remaining candidates will be the 2011 Nighthawks cheerleading finalists. Check-in will begin at 12:30 p.m., with the audition process starting at 1 p.m. Once the candidates arrive, they will be put into one group of four for dance “A,” and another group of two for dance “B.” With this group, finalists can rehearse, manipulate the choreography to increase skill difficulty and get creative with group costuming. Finalists then have until finals to perfect these routines within the groups. Candidates also will learn an opening number altogether at this time. Finals details will be given and personal interviews will be scheduled.

The final audition process will be April 16 at Westroads Mall.

- SACRAMENTO LADY LIONS - The Lady Lions’ preliminary tryouts will be February 26 and March 12, at the Sacramento Youth Football Training Center (5845 Dry Creek Road) in Rio Linda. Registration is at 11 a.m., and auditions begin at noon. Potential Lady Lions only have to attend one of the preliminary auditions, although those who don’t make the cut after one audition are allowed to re-audition at the second one.

Participants should come in dance attire of briefs or boy shorts and a half top, and dance shoes or non-marking soled athletic shoes. They are required to attend all phases of the audition. Potential Lady Lions must be willing to commit to the dance-team schedule, including rehearsals, personal training, special-event appearances and games. They must also have a reliable means of transportation.

The age minimum for tryout participants is 18 by June 1, 2011.

The final auditions, where the 2011 squad will be selected, will be Friday, April 1. More details on this event will be released as they are finalized.

AFL is ramping up for their season! The Arizona Rattlers Sidewinders are holding auditions for their high-energy dance team. Pre-lims are this Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 in Mesa, Arizona. It’s not too late to audition & go pro!

Audition Information:

• Auditions for the 2011 Arizona Rattlers Dance Team will be Saturday, January 22nd, 2011.
• Location:  Gold’s Gym  2156 E. Baseline Mesa 85204.
• Time:  Registration starts at 9:30am
• Fee:  $10 if you attended audition prep classes.  $20 audition fee – no prep classes.
• Finalist will be required to attend a rehearsal on Tuesday, January 25th as well as an interview during the week.  Finals will be held on Saturday, January 29th.

Audition Requirements:

• Female Dancers who are 18 years of age or older by the audition date.
• Must be available for all phases of the audition process and be prepared to stay as long as necessary (no exceptions!)
• Must provide one non-returnable headshot and one non-returnable full-body shot (5″×7″ or larger preferred). Photos are used for identification purposes.
• Professional photo is not mandatory. Photos should be a current representation of what you look like or will look like at the audition.
• Must provide a current dance and professional resume (if applicable).
• Must be of good moral character and successfully complete all pre-employment screening. The Arizona Rattlers are a drug-free workplace.
• Must live in Phoenix or be willing to relocate.
• Must have dependable transportation to rehearsals, games, and appearances.
• Must have a flexible schedule (with an emphasis on flexible evenings) and the ability to commit to the Arizona Rattlers Sidewinders schedule.

Audition Attire:

• Dance or athletic half-top (stomach must be showing).
• Hot pants, dance trunks, or shorts (no full or capri length pants).
• Shoes with non-marking soles.
• Performance ready hair and make-up.

Lady Raiders Dance Team Auditions
We’re expanding! Games begin in January, and 7 squad members will be added to our current 2010-2011 team. Candidates must be 18 years of age by January 1, 2011. Please see the application for schedule requirements. Auditions are available by appointment only. Candidates are welcome to attend the ongoing Tuesday night class at your leisure until you decide to proceed with an audition. Candidates will be evaluated based on the material they learn during the class.

Dancing for the Pros

This summer, Ana de Matos became one of the newest Knicks City Dancers. The 23-year-old Brazilian beauty started dancing in her home country when she was two years old, doing national styles like the samba. When Ana moved to Weston, FL, at 10, she began training in ballet, tap, jazz, modern and lyrical. As a mechanical engineering student at Duke University, Ana spent four years on the college’s dance team. Now, she’s one of seven new dancers on the 20-member KCD. Ana talked to DS about what it takes to make it to the pro team level.

Dance Spirit: Why did you decide to audition for the Knicks City Dancers?
Ana de Matos: I enjoyed Duke’s team so much and I wanted to have that experience again. I was also excited about the thought of performing at Madison Square Garden.

DS: How did you prepare for the audition?
AdM: I did the KCD workshops and audition clinics. The clinics were crucial because they were geared toward teaching you the style of the team’s choreography. And you get an inside perspective from girls already on the team. I also took gym classes because I knew I needed to be physically fit and resilient.

DS: What was the audition like? What did you have to do?
AdM: The audition was five days long. First they wanted to see our technique, so we went across the floor doing battements, turns and leaps. Then we started learning choreography and being put into groups and getting cut. On the first day, it went from 500 to 35 girls. The second day the 2009-10 KCD girls joined us, and Gil Duldulao taught choreography. After that round we were cut to 29 girls who made it to the training camp. We spent the next three days cleaning choreography. They wanted to see how quickly you process corrections and how aware you are of your spacing. On the last day, a personal trainer did a bootcamp. I had to give that one final push, which was incredibly difficult. After the bootcamp, they announced the team. The same day, we jumped right in, getting ready for our first appearance.

DS: What was your reaction when you found out you’d made the team?
AdM: I was thrilled! And I was in shock–it took a whole week to process that I’d made it that far.

DS: What are you most excited about?
AdM: Getting to know these girls. I’m also looking forward to learning a lot of new choreography and to expanding my dance background.

SEEKING PRO CHEER/DANCE CONSULTANTS
Going Pro Entertainment, LLC provides consulting for future professional cheerleaders and dancers, as well as services such as event planning, talent search, choreography, marketing and more. Pro cheer and dance consultants manage their region and guide candidates during the audition process. Additional responsibilities include planning regional events and taking an active role to market GPE services to that region. These positions work on a commission structure and typically are held by women who work full-time in other areas and have 5-15 hours per week to devote to developing their region and consulting.

GPE Consultant Qualifications:
- Professional cheerleader or dancer for the NBA or NFL for minimum 2 seasons. Preference given to candidates who performed for more than one team and/or league.
- Preferably women of elite status from your organization such as former captains, Pro Bowl and All Star representatives, choreographers, calendar cover models
- Current familiarity with auditions in your region
- Desire to work with aspiring dancers and cheerleaders
- Outstanding one-on-one communication skills

- Ability to listen and guide others
- Ability to teach dance and cheer skills
